The Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Adamu has Dissolved a subunit of the force, the Special Anti-Robbery Squard (SARS) across the 36 state police commands and the FCT. The dissolution of the subunit was made public on Sunday in the wake of several civil protests demanding for the scrapping of the unit for allegations of brutality and fundamental human rights violation across the country.
In a statement released by the public relations officer of the force headquarters in Abuja, DCP Frank Mba, he gave five (5) things to note about the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squard (SARS) which reads Bellow;
It will be recalled that many civil societies groups and notable Nigerians have been calling on the government to call to order the SARS unit of the force based on the unprofessional way of handling situations that occasionally culminate in the infringement of the fundamental human rights of the citizens.
One of the notable Nigerians who has champion the #ENDSARS campaign is the founder and motivational speaker of the Daystar Christian Centre and success power, Reverend Sam Adeyemi who called on government to intervene in the act of brutality and violation of fundamental human rights by SARS. Adeyemi in a series of tweets (@sam_adeyemi) on Saturday said the situation was unacceptable, urging young people not to back down until their demands were met.
He said,"it is totally unacceptable for the police to fire teargas at young citizens attending non-violent #ENDSARS protests. We cannot sustain the idea that the voice of the African youth is not to be heard.
The IGP believes the measure is to enhance transparency and accountability in the police services as well as providing a system of deterrence for erring police officers whose action clearly violates the right of the citizenry.
